A Dietary Guide to Soothe Irritable Bowel Syndrome

With the right diet, it is possible to effectively manage the syndrome of the côlon irritable (SCI), also called the syndrome de l'intestin irritable (SII). Here is a list of foods that are suggested for those with SCI and those that should be avoided:

Foods to prioritize:

 • Fibers: Consume a typical amount of fiber, particularly if you're constipated. Divide them up throughout the day to prevent ballooning.

Legumes: Crusted or sliced vegetables are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which enhance digestion and support gut flora1.

Gluten-free cereals: Avoid gluten-containing cereals since they may cause small intestine inflammation.

 Avoidable allergies:

Lactose: Those with SCI frequently have insufficient lactase, an enzyme that breaks down lactose.

Fructose: To be absorbed, fructose needs glucose. Its absorption slows down if it is present in excess relative to glucose.

Legumineuses: capable of causing ballooning, they are highly fermentable2.

High-fiber fruits and vegetables: Such as onions, potatoes, carrots, avocados, and other irritating foods that may exacerbate diarrhea.

Hazardous: Avoid mannequins, noisette, Brazil nuts, pistachios, cacahuète, etc. as they may cause burns.

Recognizing that every person is unique, it may be helpful to keep a food log in order to pinpoint the specific foods that trigger or exacerbate your symptoms. For individualized advice, speak with a dietitian or health professional.
